The VM-585 is a fusion of the well-known VM-550 utility locator and a built-in Ferrous Metal Detector. This combination makes it perfect for locating short-range utilities such as service drops and for detecting buried ferrous metal objects like valve box covers, tanks, and manhole covers.

The sophisticated filtering of the VM-585’s metal detector dismisses materials like bottle caps and aluminum cans, focusing solely on ferrous materials. Its manual gain control allows it to operate near large metal objects like cars and chain link fences while still searching for underground targets. The VM-585 can locate through asphalt, concrete, grass, and even temporary conditions like snow.

The days of requiring two separate devices to locate utilities and valve box covers are over. The VM-585 combines both functions into one compact, lightweight kit. You can extend the VM-585’s range to detect ground-to-sheath faults on cables by adding the optional VM-510 Stand Alone A-Frame fault locator.
